Is it dangerous to close two power plugs with transformers into the same outlet?
I have two external hard drives. Both of them have a wire with a large transformer at the end. Would it be dangerous to the drive if I connect both wires in the same 2-socket outlet?
Sewaba, it is not dangerous. How cable splits have nothing to do with the power from the mains. Like the one answer said – do not change anything. Other than that – you're fine. Think of it this way – A hair dryer running around 1500 watts. It is the nominal power. I just checked my external drive. It is 25 watts. That means I could run SIXTY hard drives out the wall outlet, if I wanted. The store will have either a fuse or a circuit breaker that will blow if you use too much power. It will not happen in this case – but if you did, it is the result. The houses are designed to make it literally impossible for you to do something dangerous, so long as all you are doing is putting things in and use things the way it's supposed to be used. It is a bad idea to join a bunch of branches and run a circuit at the border, and they recommend against it – but you will not run into problems with hard drives – ever. That said – it is important for those transformers on the end to get enough air to cool them, or they can build up heat. It is not because you have 2 connected – it is the nature of how they work. A normal one plugged will still get hot, but I do not get super hot, so long as I am free air around it. The danger is when people have them in sockets on the ground, so they pile stuff on top of them, the heat can not spread, and it builds up. Because heat is being formed independently of the electrical circuit, it is free to start a fire because the switch does not 'believe' a problem.-Kevin
