What is the Automatic Indexing (AI) of Nikkor lenses, and how does it work?

Im going back on 20 years here, but Im curious. AI and AI-S featured Lenses for Nikon – What does it mean? PS now the proud owner of a FM2N. Yay!

Automatic indexing, or AI, the camera meter to measure exposure through the lens at maximum aperture. (so you can focus and compose with a bright viewfinder) So when you release the shutter button, the camera stops the lens down to the selected aperture. "S" in the AI-s allowed for Program AE Exposure Mode, among other [more complex] applications – mostly with masking linearity. Besides this, there is no difference between either an AI or AI-S lenses. If you use a camera without program mode, as a Nikon Fe2 (and your FM2n), there is no difference – but it must be an AI lens. (otherwise, you have to use stop down metering)
